Dome Ultimate League Rules

What is Ultimate?

Combining the non-stop movement and athletic endurance of soccer with the aerial passing skills of football, a game of Ultimate is played by two seven-player squads with a high-tech plastic disc on a field similar to football. The object of the game is to score by catching a pass in the opponent"s end zone. A player must stop running while in possession of the disc, but may pivot and pass to any of the other receivers on the field. Ultimate is a transition game in which players move quickly from offense to defense on turnovers that occur with a dropped pass, an interception, a pass out of bounds, or when a player is caught holding the disc for more than ten seconds. Ultimate is governed by Spirit of the Game™, a tradition of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the players rather than referees. Ultimate is played in more than 42 countries by hundreds of thousands of men and women, girls and boys.

Concordia Ultimate is played between two teams of five players (2 women, 3 men) with substitutions "on the fly". Consult the additional rules in this document for more clarification.

The 10 Simple Rules of Ultimate:

  1. The Field - A rectangular shape with endzones at each end. A regulation field is 70 yards by 40 yards, with endzones 25 yards deep. The Stinger Dome field is 60 yards by 30 yards, with endzones 7 yards deep.

  1. Initiate Play - Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective endzone line. The defense throws ("pulls") the disc to the offense. A regulation game has seven players per team. With Concordia Ultimate we play with a 5-person team, consisting of 2 women and 3 men per team.

  1. Scoring - Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense's endzone, the offense scores a point. Play is initiated after each score.

  1. Movement of the Disc - The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc ("thrower") has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower ("marker") counts out the stall count. We will be using a stall count of 8 seconds.

  1. Change of possession - When a pass in not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense.

  1. Substitutions - In a regulation game players not in the game may replace players in the game after a score and during an injury timeout. We will have substitutions "the fly".

  1. Non-contact - No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made.

  1. Fouls - When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone.

  1. Self-Officiating - Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes.

  1. Spirit of the Game - Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play.

*** To deter theft, please ensure that all players' personal belongings are grouped together and that players' keep watch on their equipment during matches. ***

Additional Rules for Concordia Indoor-Style Ultimate

The following additions to the "10 Simple Rules" are adapted from the Montreal Ultimate Association indoor rules (http://www.montrealultimate.ca/igeneral.htm):

  1. Games are played according to time (60 minutes) (2 halves of 25 min) separated by a5-minute half time. The end of a game is determined by time, not by the score. Games can end even if the score is tied.

  2. The game length is determined by time. A whistle or buzzer at the end of the game signals that time has run out and the game is over, regardless of what is taking place at the time of the whistle. The point in progress is not played out.

  3. A team must have at least 3 players on the playing surface, although, they cannot have more than 3 men at the same time.

  4. The 10-second stall count is replaced by an 8-second stall count. In every situation where the stall count usually goes back to 5 (ex. contested foul), the stall count will go back to 4.

  5. There is no pull after a point. When a team scores, the player who has possession of the disc PLACES IT GENTLY on the ground at the first point of contact where the goal was scored. Also, the player acknowledges that he/she has scored a goal by raising the disc over his/her head. The offensive team has 8 seconds to take possession of the disc and cannot walk the disc up to the front of the goal line. They must put the disc into play from the first point of contact where the goal was scored. When the offensive team takes possession of the disc, the defensive team may initiate a stall count on 0 (as in every other situation, the player on defense must be within 3 metres to initiate a stall count). The team on offense must take possession of the disc within the time allotted (8 seconds) or defensive team will begin the 8-second stall count.

  6. Players sub on the fly. The substitution area is approximately mid-field at each team's sideline. Each player exiting the field must touch the hand of the player who will be replacing her before she can exit the field, and the player entering the field cannot do so until her hand has been touched. This obviously does not apply during injury substitutions. If a substitution results in too many players, of either gender, on the field, the result is an automatic turnover and the defensive team takes possession of the disc at the area of the stoppage of play due to the violation.

  7. If a pull lands out of bounds, a brick may be taken to the middle point of the front line of the end zone. If the pull lands in bounds, it will be played from where it lands. If a pull lands in bounds and rolls out, it will be played from the closest point on the field (including the end zone) to where it rolled out.

  8. If a team gains possession in the endzone, which it is defending following a turnover, the player must play the disc where it was caught or intercepted. The player does not bring the disc up to the endzone line.

  9. Each team is entitled to one 60-second time-out in each half (time permitting). Injury substitutions do not constitute a time-out.

  10. If a team is not ready to play when the whistle or buzzer sounds signalling that the game has started, the other team may immediately assess 1 point if they have all their players on the line ready to play. They may assess an additional point at 2-minute intervals.

  11. If the disc crosses or touches the back end zone line, the disc may be put into play at either the back or front end zone line.

  12. Foot blocks are not permitted. A foot block is defined as an attempt by the defender within 3 metres of the thrower to block a throw with his/her foot or leg raised off the ground. An attempted foot block is treated as a foul on the marker.

  13. * The Captain's Clause is in effect.

Violation of Safety Policy

  1. Any player violating the safety policy of the league can be expelled from the league without compensation. We ask that the captains remind their players before each and every game about the safety guidelines and to respect and abide by them.

Replacement Players

  1. All replacement players will be chosen at the discretion of the captain. Captains should chose replacements who are equivalent to the players they are replacing. If the replacement player(s) skill level is high enough to create a disadvantage for the other team, then captains of both teams must verbally agree on such a substitution. All replacement players will be required to purchase a DayPass at the Service Centre before their game has started.
  2. A policy concerning replacement players during the playoffs will be provided to the captains before the playoffs begin.

Weather Cancellation Guideline:

To ensure the safety of all participants, play in the Stinger Dome will be suspended during periods where high winds are present or anticipated. Due to the transitory nature of wind conditions, please contact the Campus Recreation office (514-848-2424 ext. 3858) for updated information when windy conditions are present.
